Exploring the Transmission of Information and the Relationship Between People and Things

Authored——PENG Hsing-Kai

Among artists working within the literary interpretation of art, Kuan-Ting CHEN undoubtedly stands out. The world he presents appears to be built by codes, constantly mesmerizing viewers, and his background in science, industrial design, and architecture inspires him to explore the relationship between information transmission, people, and objects in his graphic designs. His works reveal an obsession with logic and his perception of how “data” converts into “information” in the human brain.

Kuan-Ting CHEN is currently enrolled at ArtEZ in the Netherlands. He briefly returned to Taipei for work and studies in 2020 due to the pandemic. After returning to ArtEZ, he created his renowned work Met Stoelen an ISBN-free handmade book made with public domain images that showcases “a seat of the chair resting on the seat of a book”. By using a Japanese bind to keep the book half-open, Kuan-Ting CHEN captures the abstractness of the rigid and right angle of the chair's back.

Kuan-Ting CHEN is fascinated with using design as a language to intrigue and entertain the public and this piece of art has made him the only Taiwanese designer to win the gold medal of the Stiftung Buchkunst Best Book Design of the World Award.
