Undefined: Five New Talents in Taiwanese Visual Art
Taiwan’s openness and cultural diversity not only accommodate the freedom of development for local artists, but also attract artists from other parts of Asia to study, exchange ideas, and build their careers. In Taiwan’s visual industry—where American and Japanese influences dominate—these artists engage in creative practices driven by inspirations rooted in their own cultural backgrounds.
In this seminar, TPadd assoc. chairman Hsing-Kai Peng introduced five visual practitioners, aged between 24 and 28, who are active in Taiwan’s art and literary fields and come from Taiwan, Indonesia, and Macau. He shared how, through raw and avant-garde approaches, they have inherited the cultural codes of Taiwan in the 1970s and 1980s, and contributed to the formation of a new blueprint for Taiwan’s contemporary visual culture. Hsing-Kai Peng positioned London-based artist Jesse Kanda as a symbolic new starting point for contemporary graphic art, and elaborated on how “religiousness” in artworks has undergone a decentralising transformation following the shift in subjectivity between artists and their creations.
Interviewed artists:
