INTL International: The World's Trendiest Design Festival

July 27, 2022

INTL International as the youngest, fast-growing, influential, and credible international graphic design event, was launched by Beth Wilson (co-founder of Warriors Studio) and James Gilchrist in 2014. Their graduation project at Edinburgh College of Art (ECA), INTL's predecessor–Scottish Graphic Design Festival, aimed to create a community of shared learning, focusing on gathering sharp visual propositions and independent spirits, connecting Scotland and the world via graphic design. The idea had drawn the attention of designers, institutions, and workers in the local design industry and was quickly sponsored by Deutsche Bank.

The first catalogue featured all selected entries on a single double-sided poster. Beyond expectation, not only do epoch-making works created by well-known designers but plenty of low-key visual designers who had rarely appeared in international competitions were included as well. Part of the selection has heavily influenced the development of global graphic design even till nowadays. This quickly turned INTL into an international event, which started out as a student-initiated, five-day regional program that had snowballed into a month-long annual design celebration.

In this lecture, James Gilchrist (co-founder of INTL International) and Hsing-Kai Peng︎︎︎ (chairman of TPadd assoc.) will discuss how designers are able to participate in the development of international visual languages via posters–the purest medium of graphic design exploration, to encourage creators who aren’t adhering on the mainstream to carry on exploring and experimenting under a healthy competition, and collectively develop a design history that belongs to this generation. Furthermore, in the contemporary era when the absolute value has gradually evaporated, the mission of the award organization which symbolizes the centre and authority has to carry on.
