INTL International: The World's Trendiest Design Festival

July 27, 2022

INTL International is one of the youngest, fastest-growing, and most influential and credible graphic design events worldwide. Founded in 2014 by Beth Wilson and James Gilchrist, co-founders of Warriors Studio, INTL originated as their graduate project at the Edinburgh College of Art. Initially known as the Scottish Graphic Design Festival, its goal was to create a collaborative learning community that connected Scotland to the world through bold visual statements and an independent spirit. This vision quickly united stars, institutions, and professionals within the local design industry and garnered sponsorship from Deutsche Bank.

Their inaugural annual publication showcased all selected works on a single double-sided poster. Impressively, the collection included understated designers rarely seen in international competitions as well as groundbreaking, globally renowned works, some of which continue to influence the design world today. This approach propelled the Scottish Graphic Design Festival into the international spotlight. What began as a student-led, five-day regional initiative evolved into a month-long annual design celebration.

This talk features James Gilchrist, co-founder of INTL International, in conversation with Hsing-Kai Peng︎︎︎, chairperson of the organising body. Together, they will explore how designers can use posters—the purest form of graphic design—as a medium to participate in the evolution of international visual language. The discussion will also focus on fostering a competitive yet constructive environment that encourages independent creators to experiment and innovate, shaping a design legacy for this generation. Furthermore, they will examine the role of awards institutions, which once symbolised authority and centrality, in a contemporary world where absolute values are increasingly in flux.
